How to update your N96 firmware

big pic

The first firmware update for the N96 is now available. Find out what’s new and how to get it.

What’s new

Performance and stability have both been improved with the 11.018 firmware release. New features include:

  • Faster system-wide execution speed
  • Overall stability fixes to improve robustness
  • IHF speaker volume range increased for video and TV playback
  • Autofocus accuracy improved for still imaging
  • Improved media key control if multiple media apps are opened
  • 3D ringtone issue resolved

Note: For Mobile TV (DVB-H) markets there is a special version published (SW Rel 11.101). It is identical to SW Rel 11.018, except for some functionality in the Mobile TV (DVB-H) area.

How to get the update

Option 1: Over the air - no PC or cables needed

  1. Go to the Device Manager (Menu > Tools > Utilities > Device Manager).
  2. Select Options > Check for updates. (If it says no updates are found, that could mean the update is not available yet for your particular device/provider; check back again later.)
  3. Follow the prompts to download the update. As connection, choose either your operator data connection (there may be data transfer fees charged by your operator) or WLAN.
  4. Enjoy!

Option 2: Using your PC

  1. Get the latest Nokia Software Updater from nokia.com/softwareupdate and install it on your PC.
  2. Connect your N96 to a charger, then connect to your PC with the USB cable (use “PC Suite” mode).
  3. Start Nokia Software Updater and follow the instructions.

Note: While the good news is that the software update preserves your personal data and applications, you should always make a safety backup of your device content before updating the software.

After you get it, let us know: what do you think of the update?
